Hear AJ Davila’s Unchained Garage-Pop Gem ‘Animal’

AJ Davila, 'Animal,' 'Terror/Amor'

With Davila 666, A.J. Davila bashes out irrepressible shout-alongs in the proud garage-rock tradition, with enough panache that SPIN followed them on tour for a 2011 photo gallery. On February 18, Davila will release his debut solo album, Terror/Amor, via Nacional Records. The San Juan, Puerto Rico-based bandleader sings in Spanish, but lucky for Anglophones, the title of scrappy album opener “Animal” also signifies in Amurrican; lyrics aside, it’s a bug-eyed, fuzzed-out party song that crumbles into slowed-and-throwed, pitched-down vocal effects by the end. Guests on the LP include Black Lips’ Cole Alexander, along with Alex Anwandter, Sergio Rotman, Juan Cirerol, and Fofe Abreu. Hear “Animal” below.
