The Growlers’ ‘Ol’ Rat Face’ Gets Revenge in Bloody Video

Growlers 'Ol' Rat Face' Video

Acid-cooked beach bums the Growlers snuck out Gilded Pleasures in November — an EP in name, but an album in function thanks to the nine tracks therein. This follow-up to the Southern California crew’s Hung at Heart LP offers a simpler more soulful brand of surf-psych, full of strange stories like “Ol’ Rat Face.” On that song, Brooks Nielsen sings about a shady character: “Here comes ol’ rat face, drunk again and shedding lies / He keeps a straight face, seldom laughs and never cries.” But the accompanying video, directed by Taylor Bonin, is a bit more sympathetic to this fella’s plight. Above, we see the members of the Growlers acting crude and callous toward a rat-nosed youth. But before long, the path is cleared for Rat Face’s revenge. This’d be a good time to break out that interstellar RV.
