Kacey Musgraves Rolls Her Eyes, Points West in ‘Follow Your Arrow’ Video

Kacey Musgraves, "Follow Your Arrow," video

It’s called country and western, and Kacey Musgraves slyly takes up the trappings of the directional in the long-overdue video for her conformity-tweaking masterstroke “Follow Your Arrow.” We’ve already gushed at length about the song, one of SPIN’s 50 Best of 2013, and accompanying long-player Same Trailer Different Park, one of SPIN’s 50 Best Albums of 2013. Fresh off a pair of Grammy nominations, the Texas-born singer and songwriter has shared a playful video for March album’s standout track, via CMT.

“Follow Your Arrow” already thumbs it nose at the staid Nashville establishment (from sort of within it, but never mind), championing pot-smoking and same-sex relationships — your call either way, though, no pressure — so the video doesn’t need to repeat the gesture too overtly. Instead, Musgraves’ arrow leads her more than a thousand miles left of Music City to the Joshua Tree desert, where she throws wry faces lip-syncing the song backed a jaunty all-male band in Western-cut suits. Go west, sister (or don’t), but a “whore-ibble person” is one who fails to crack a smile about something during this clip. That is, if it’s something you’re into, because #YOLO. Is it weird to hope even M.I.-“Y.A.L.A.”-A. might agree?
