Flaming Lips’ New ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ Cover Is (Surprise!) Trippy

The Flaming Lips, Beatles, John Lennon, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," cover, stream, video, New Year's Eve

While the throngs are in New York City’s Times Square for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, concertgoers across the country in Colorado will be ringing in 2014 with some expert psych-rock. As the Future Heart points out, the Flaming Lips have confirmed they’ll play a set of John Lennon-led Beatles songs on December 31 at Aspen’s Belly Up. Sirius XM Radio Jam On will broadcast the show, and songs the Lips are rehearsing include “Tomorrow Never Knows,” ”Come Together,” “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except for Me and My Monkey,” “Across the Universe,” “Dear Prudence,” and, yes, “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

Over the weekend, the Oklahoma City band shared its “Lucy in the Sky” cover in full (below), and it’s as elegantly dazed as you might hope. Also scroll down to watch video from the Lips’ New Year’s Eve rehearsals. If you happen to be in Aspen, you can also catch the group tonight, when the Future Heart speculates they’ll play a set spanning their full 30-year career — something from that newly surfaced 1983 Flaming Lips cassette demo, maybe? Check out our list of 50 more New Year’s Eve shows.
