The first inklings of the Breeders’ big 2013 came almost exactly a year ago, when All Tomorrow’s Parties announced the lineup behind 1993’s revered Last Splash would reunite to perform at this year’s Bradford Cox-curated festival. Since then, SPIN’s May 2013 cover stars have lavishly reissued Last Splash and performed the album in full at festival and club dates around the world. Now, as the Last Splash 20th anniversary tour winds down, the Breeders will be playing their 1990 debut album Pod in full as well.
The lineup of Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson will be adding full-album performances of Pod to their previously scheduled run-throughs of Last Splash this month in Chicago, Boston, New York, and Austin, Texas. Previously on the tour, they included Pod only in London, San Francisco, and Sydney. New England heirs to the indie throne Speedy Ortiz will be opening most of the remaining dates. Beloved, ever-underrated alt-rockers Imperial Teen will open the New Year’s Eve show in Austin.
Kim Deal’s 2013 would’ve been an estimable one even without a Breeders tour. In June, the Pixies announced she had quit the group, starting a trend of bassists named Kim not working out for the latter-day Pixies. Meanwhile, she has been releasing her own series of solo singles, including delicate video selection “Are You Mine?” and the standout anthem “Hot Shot.”
