See Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Tease New Album, Cover the Velvet Underground

stephen malkmus and the jicks, new songs, wig out at jagbags

Stephen Malkmus is on schedule to release his sixth album with the Jicks early next year. Though the follow-up to 2011’s excellent Mirror Traffic hasn’t been officially announced yet, the ex-Pavement leader has confirmed that the LP will boast the very Malkmus-y title Wig Out at Jagbags. On November 8, Malkmus and the Jicks played some new material during a hometown show at Portland’s Crystal Ballroom, and fan-shot footage of the set has since surfaced. Stereogum points to video of two songs reportedly destined for Jagbags — “Cinnamon and Lesbians” and “Houston Hades” — and another two — “Lariat” and “Independence Street” — that are likely to appear to on the upcoming full-length but haven’t been confirmed yet. What is clear from the clips is that all four tracks are wonderfully shambolic tunes rich in Malkmus’ signature lackadaisical wisdom.

Above, catch “Cinnamon and Lesbians,” a song the 47-year-old frontman says is about Portland, or “any town with cinnamon and lesbians in it.” Scroll down to see the other three, followed by an encore that segues from Pavement’s “Harness Your Hopes” to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” to the Velvet Underground‘s “Beginning to See the Light” — a likely nod to the late Lou Reed.
