Sky Ferreira Stars in Lynchian, Lingerie-Laden ‘Night Time, My Time’ Video

If Sky Ferreira’s debut album Night Time, My Time makes one overarching point via general excellence, it’s similar to a song title from fellow prefab-pop survivor Robyn: “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What to Do.” When the “Everything Is Embarrassing” singer released her “You’re Not the One” video in the run-up to release, we weren’t sure about the un-Robyn-like focus on Ferreira’s model looks. But she’s the one calling the prude-spurning shots — “I’m not saying I’m exploiting myself, but … I’d rather do it myself than someone else exploit me,” she told Rolling Stone — and there’s no questioning her with the striking video for her LP’s title track.

Another nugget from that not-yet-online interview: Ferreira took a David Lynch film class in community college, and her familiarity with the auteur director is fully on display in the visual, overseen by usual collaborator Grant Singer. The video is set at night, of course, with Ferreira posing in a red wig, a black wig, and various lacy underthings, mainly in a car and a bed, though a motel scene is an ominous signal. She also appears to be riding a child’s toy pony, and we see brief shots of her water-splashed face that bring to mind not only the album’s shower-scene cover but the fate of Twin Peaks‘ Laura Palmer. “Faster and faster,” Ferreira sings, as the editing picks up and the Beach House-edged moodiness turns dangerously discordant, and here comes the night time.

In a busy couple of days for Ferreira-related developments, she also performed on Late Show With David Letterman on November 25. She nailed the poppily percolating “You’re Not the One,” finding a balance between detached cool and relatable expressiveness behind her dark shades. Watch that below. At the same time, as part of a B-Sides CD, she has released a few more non-album tracks: stripped-down live favorite “Werewolf (I Like You),” Jesus and Mary Chain-octane “I Can’t Say No to Myself,” and bouncy kiss-off “I’m on Top” — all three compare well to what’s on the album, and you can scroll down to hear them.

Ferreira’s Letterman set was a highlight of a packed late-night TV slate that featured narco-pop predecessors Mazzy Star on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Southern rap lynchpin Juicy J making it rain on Arsenio, and “A Deep Slow Panic”-purveyors AFI on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
