Lou Reed’s Will Leaves Everything to His Wife and Family

Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, will, estate

“Sometimes, you have to be hip enough to be square,” Lou Reed once told legendary music/art critic Dave Hickey. Fittingly, there’s nothing avant-garde about the former Velvet Underground singer’s last will and testament. As the AP reports, Reed left his estate to his wife, musician Laurie Anderson, and other family members after his death at age 71 on October 27. A filing in a New York City court wills most of Reed’s belongings, including a Manhattan penthouse and a house in the Hamptons, to Anderson, who married him in 2008 after years together as a couple. About 25% of the state goes to Reed’s sister, with a $500,000 bequest for their mother’s care. It’s as Anderson wrote in an obituary: “Lou was a prince.”
