Haim have covered Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough” before, but not like this. Last night (November 11) at New York’s Roseland Ballroom for a taping for the VH1 You Oughta Know concert special, the Days Are Gone trio brought out “Royals” queen Lorde for a swaying, synth-lit performance of the 1993 Tuesday Night Music Club ballad, which has hung around long enough to outlive any mall-bound associations — and to make Crow’s recent transition into country now seem only fitting. The sisters Haim’s previous “Strong Enough” came in a radio in-studio session, so when they say this is their first time playing the song live, they’re not kidding. With rotating turns on vocals, an economical guitar solo, and glass-bottle percussion, it’s a supple, restrained cover, and that’s its quiet strength. Watch the video above while it lasts, and check out the full show on VH1 on November 21 at 9 p.m. EST.
