“Pearl Jam Week” just went a little bit country. Only a little bit. As the grunge godheads’ chart-topping new Lightning Bolt soundtracks the World Series, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon has been hosting a different PJ cover every night. First up Chris Cornell and the Avett Brothers unearthed an early B-side, then Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold implicity critiqued the whole Brothers & Sons beard-band phenomenon, and last night Dierks Bentley performed Ten classic “Alive” with Mike McCready himself and the Roots. In other words, the lyrics are now straight-up comprehensible and sung in a friendly voice you can easily imagine calling someone “ma’am,” backed by folk-rock organ and with a bluesy guitar barrage at the end. Fallon said Bentley has a follow-up to last year’s Home on the way in early 2014. And if so, if so… this might be a good time to remind you to check out SPIN’s new country column.
