It was only in July that Migos’ “Versace” began to take over the world thanks to a late-June remix from Drake, but the song has lived a very full life. Since then the SPIN interview subjects made their New York City debut, went shopping at the Versace store at Phipps Plaza mall in Atlanta and saw the track remixed by more than 40 other artists, including Frank Ocean (sorta). Still, “Versace” somehow never got the video treatment until just now. Thankfully, the delayed results are appropriately epic.
Directed by Gabriel Hart, the clip sets the three Migos — plus Zaytoven, the track’s producer — in a glorious mansion, where they drape themselves in Versace and in girls who are also wearing Versace. There is also a live cheetah involved, as well as a live Donatella Versace inconspicuously lounging on a couch around the 3:23 mark.
The treatment dovetails nicely with the video for Future’s “Honest,” which similarly featured the Atlanta sing-rapper prowling through an ornate villa. But Migos will be hoping that their clip will do for “Versace” what a visual couldn’t do for “Honest”: give it a second wind on the charts. “Versace” was a shooting star across the sky of the Hot 100 over the summer and is beginning to slip on Billboard’s rap and R&B radio airplay chart. With streaming now folded into the formula, we may see the track shoot up once again.
Or maybe we’ll see the rise of “Hannah Montana,” another song off Migos’ mixtape Y.R.N. The fellas cut through the “Versace” video in order to give that track a clip of its own, in which various white girls in white outfits twerk on marble steps while the men in Migos stand around watching.
