Watch David Letterman Adorably Fanboy Over TV on the Radio’s ‘Mercy’

TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe recently told SPIN that he and his bandmates aren’t in any rush to follow their most recent album with another full-length.”We’re sort of collecting material for a record,” he said of a potential successor to 2011’s Nine Types of Light, “but right now we’re only thinking in terms of songs, smaller things we can put out regularly until an album seems possible.” Naturally, followers of TVOTR were excited to hear two such “smaller things” when the band shared a pair of new songs earlier this year: “Mercy” and “Million Miles.” One fan who seems absolutely thrilled by the Cookie Mountain climbers’ comeback is David Letterman. TVOTR dropped in on the Late Show last night (September 5), delivered a stunning performance of “Mercy,” and elicited a flood of gushing praise from the talk show host.

“Nice going,” he said to Dave Sitek immediately after the New Wavy surge ceased. “Wow! How about that! Yes! TV on the Radio!” Letterman then addressed the camera, saying, “What do you think? Oh my God… Fantastic! Thank you so very much, great pleasure to see you!”

To see what exactly made Letterman freak out so much, watch TVOTR play “Mercy” above. And be sure to check out the song’s spacey, stop-motion music video, out since yesterday.
