Watch Neko Case Pivot From Garage Swagger to Slow-Burning Gloom on ‘Fallon’

The title of Neko Case’s new album is too long to fit into one breath, and last night, the music was too dynamic to squeeze into a one-song TV performance. The alt-country singer and songwriter graced the stage at Late Night With Jimmy Fallon for a twofer from her fantastic (inhale) The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You (take another breath; it’s one of our 50 Fall Albums That You Gotta Hear). During the main broadcast, she and her band bounded through raggedy lead single “Man,” though sadly without studio guest guitarist M. Ward. For a web exclusive, they waltzed into the moonlit “Night Still Comes.” The double-header served as yet another testament to the New Pornographer’s range and confidence. As she sang on Fallon, “You didn’t know what a man was / Until I showed you.”
