Rick Ross Portrays Troubled South Africa Trip as Kingly Endeavor

Rick Ross in South Africa

Earlier this month, Rick Ross traveled to South Africa to perform a string of shows in a number of cities that included Johannesburg and the northeastern town of Nelspruit. The quality of these concerts, and the trip in general, varies depending on where you’re getting your information. On the one hand we have the new mini-documentary detailing the Maybach bawse’s time in South Africa through the eyes of the rapper himself — in the eight-minute video we see private jets and weed, traditional dances being performed in his honor, and thousands of adoring fans rapping along to “John,” his hit with Lil Wayne.

On the other hand you have the account of Robert Gumede, the billionaire IT magnate who brought Ross to Nelspruit for a free concert as a part of his elaborate 50th birthday celebration. According to a report in Sunday World, Gumede was less than pleased by Ross’s attitude after Ross allegedly tossed items from his hotel room after claiming that some jewelry was stolen from the space. Per the paper, Gumede told the crowd at KaNyamazane Stadium, who’d gathered to watch Ross perform, the following: “Tell this American to come and fetch his bag, it’s here. He mustn’t piss me off.”

Ross also reportedly got into a squabble with the family of kwaito musician Arthur Mafokate after the latter’s 11-year-old daughter and her friends played a little doorbell-ditch on the rapper’s room at the hotel. “It’s not right what he’s doing,” Mafokate said vaguely of either the incident or Ricky Rozay’s presence in South Africa — perhaps (probably) both.

In other news, Ross’ Maybach Music Group announced the date and track list of Self Made Vol. 3, the third compilation in a progressively underwhelming series. The 16-track set features contributions from label stalwarts like Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Gunplay, Stalley, Rockie Fresh and Omarion, plus contributions from hired guns like Lil Boosie, Birdman, Fabolous, Pusha T, and French Montana.
