Lady Gaga Gets ‘Applause’ From Drag Queens in Lyric Video

Lady Gaga 'Applause' Lyric Video Artpop Madonna Cher

Lady Gaga’s lackluster “Applause” now has a new lyric video to match. Filmed at Micky’s dance club in West Hollywood, the clip features the ARTPOP star partying with drag queens, little monsters, and bar regulars in the glitzy, feather-flecked environs. While the video was supposed to go live at noon Eastern Time, fans weren’t able to access the clip until. Their hero rewarded their patience with humor, tweeting “#lateygaga.”

“Applause” has come under fire not just from critics (who, according to the Mother Monster, should never be trusted), but also from fans of Madonna. Yes, Gaga is once again being accused of plagiarising the Material Girl. This time, Madge’s faithful are claiming she ripped off “Girl Gone Wild,” a 2012 single from Madonna’s EDM-aiming MDNA. Considering “Applause” relies on a “relatively generic electro-pop pulse that’s a bit behind the times,” that sounds about par for the course. Still, listeners can judge for themselves by sampling a mashup video at the bottom of this post.

Meanwhile, a collaboration between Stefani Germanotta and another Top 40 icon has been circulating as well: “The Greatest Thing,” a duet Gaga recorded with Cher, leaked on Tuesday (August 13), much to Cher’s dismay. The 67-year-old diva tweeted, “Disappointed (I’ve sat on fkng song 4 over a yr) NOW SOME ASSHOLE LEAKS WRONG VERSION! GaGa’s SINGLE IS GREAT, & THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS.”
