Minor Alps’ ‘Buried Plans’ Unites Juliana Hatfield and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws

Juliana Hatfield Matthew Caws Minor Alps 'Buried Plans' get there

Nada Surf frontman Matthew Caws and heavy folkie Juliana Hatfield are Minor Alps. The pair originally met back in the ’90s at a gig, and they’ve worked together before: he guested on her 2008 track “Such a Beautiful Girl” and Hatfield returned the favor for Lucky B-side “I Wanna Take You Home.” But now they’ve taken their musical relationship to the next level, duetting under a name coined when Caws attempted to describe a lesser French mountain.

The friends will drop their debut, Get There, October 29 via Barsuk, but they’ve shared their first song today. “Buried Plans” is a loop-happy Americana-eletronic hybrid (Ameritronicanaca?). Following the album’s release, Minor Alps will hit the road for a brief tour. Check out the song and some tour dates after a word from our sad-pop sponsor on this project’s origins.

“Over the last few years, we’ve taken turns suggesting we do something together,” Caws told Paste. “The timing was right for both of us this year, so away we went. From the first session singing on one of her songs, I had a great feeling in the studio, like we were speaking the same language. Her melodies have always seemed familiar to me, as if our ancestors came from the same town.”
