Drake Too Busy Performing at MTV’s VMAs to Drop Album On Time

Drake, 'Nothing Was the Same,' MTV Video Music Awards, release date, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Hudson Mohawke

Drake is going to be putting on quite a show at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25. That is, unless it’s a coincidence that he announced his awards ceremony performance on the same day his upcoming album Nothing Was the Same was pushed back a week (via Miss Info). Well, it probably was a coincidence, but let’s still put Breaking Bad on the DVR, okay?

As Drake tweeted earlier today, “Excited to announce I’ll be performing at the 2013 @MTV VMA’s!!! #Brooklyn #OVO #Started #NeedAKawsTrophy.” According to USA Today, he’ll do Best Direction nominee “Started From the Bottom.” He joins a VMAs lineup that also features Lady GagaKaty Perry, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, and Kanye West. And Daft Punk, if you believe Stephen Colbert. And ‘N Sync, if you believe the New York Post. (As Us Weekly reports, Lance Bass has commented on the ‘N Sync reunion rumors but conspicuously chosen not to deny them.)

As for Nothing Was the Same, the follow-up to 2011’s great Take Care was previously set to come out on September 17. Now the likes of Best Buy and Amazon say it’ll come out on September 24. Drake tacitly confirmed the change, retweeting a joke from his producer Noah “40” Shebib: “Hold on we’re almost done.”

That, of course, is a reference to latest Drake single “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” which features Majid Jordan and was recently covered by Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes. That track followed a wealth of new Drake material this year, including “All Me,” “Girls Love Beyoncé,” “The Motion,” “Jodeci Freestyle,” “5AM in Toronto,” and “Started From the Botton.” Though the only track list so far is a big, fat fakeRolling Stone reports that Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and Hudson Mohakwe will feature on the album.
