When singers insist they’ve never been heartbroken, listen to their voices and not the words. The latest offering from Dr. Dog’s upcoming B-Room (via Stereogum) is an elegantly emotion-wracked case in point. Despite all of those protestations of being free from a “Broken Heart,” the bittersweet rasp of the band’s vocalists gets at the truth even before one notices the rambling hook about how “she really loved him, but I couldn’t see it though.” Meanwhile, limber bass, frazzled guitar, and a smattering of piano extend the soul-steeped style of “The Truth,” also from B-Room — the album arrives October 1 via Anti, and you can pre-order it here. The lyric video’s accompaniment of vintage footage from an amusement park or fair furthers the song’s sepia-toned sense of throwback, but the point is that certain feelings are supposed to outlast a particular era or genre.
