Smashing Pumpkins’ New ‘Oceania’ 3D Concert Movie Mercifully Contains Actual Hits

Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan

Smashing Pumpkins are about to deliver a 3D concert movie and live double-disc featuring a full performance of one of the iconic alternative rockers’ albums. Yes, it’s last year’s Oceania, which we said shows Billy Corgan “does, in fact, have a function.” We also praised the current cast of hired Pumpkins, who actually sound like a crucial part of the record.

Still, when Oceania: Live in NYC arrives on September 3 via Universal Music Enterprises, it won’t only be new, old-sounding SP. The band’s December 10 set at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, captured here, also includes ’90s hits such as “Disarm” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” Plus, Corgan and company cover David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” which recently joined the limited ranks of songs that have ben performed in space. The concert will be available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital, and as a deluxe two-CD/DVD set.

Oceania is part of a larger project called Teargarden by Kaleidoscope. There may be more tears in kaleidoscope: Corgan recently said the band was in the first day of writing a new SP album. Then again, as long ago as September he told Billboard he’d “already started writing for a new album” that “definitely seems like it’s going to be more of a rockin’ affair.” You heard the man, cool kids — make some time. (Lots and lots of time: SP are also reissuing their 1996 box set The Aeroplane Flies High, now as a 104-track behemoth.)
