R. Kelly Goes From Broke to ‘Money, Cars, Mad Hos’ on ‘My Story’

R. Kelly 2 chainz my story

Fresh off a summer in which he appeared at Coachella, Bonnaroo and Pitchfork Music Festival, R. Kelly has released his new single “My Story,” featuring (who else?) 2 Chainz. It finds Kells swinging all the way back to an ultra-modern sound after his glorious throwback LPs Love Letter and Write Me Back to results that are unfortunately quite disappointing. The track — presumably self-produced — is leaden and repetitive, showing little of the humor or songwriting prowess that has defined Kelly’s career. 2 Chainz’s verse, meanwhile, isn’t exactly as bad as it is hilariously off-topic.

The single is reportedly the first off of Kelly’s upcoming album Black Panties, which is slated to be his first pop-oriented full-length since 2009’s Untitled. That album similarly featured an irritating lead single (“Supaman High,” featuring OJ Da Juiceman) but did manage to produce a few great tracks, notably the follow-up singles “Number One” and “Echo”. We’ll find out if Black Panties follows the same path whenever he gets around to releasing it.
