As with many Migos songs, there’s a deceptively simple double meaning at the heart of “Chirpin.” Elsewhere on the Atlanta rap trio’s Young Rich Niggas mixtape, “FEMA” uses the massive government failure during Hurricane Katrina as a way of coldly conveying how quickly the guys can churn out crack. “Chirpin” starts with a less politically charged idea, the cliché about birds chirping in the morning, and then connects that via a cell phone’s “chirpin” to, yup, more drug-dealing. The Best New Artists stars have a way of rapping that’s at once incantatory and enthusiastic, and that carries over to the song’s video, where innocent-spirited imagery of a Migos member setting a bird free mostly makes way for hand-held shots of the guys rhyming next to a serious-faced, gyrating woman. Brand new day, same old Migos, and if that goofy, bird-chirp hook sticks in your head — which it probably will — then they’ve succeeded.
