Metallica’s ‘Through the Never’ Soundtrack Reloads Well-Worn Greatest Hits

metallica, through the never, movie film soundtrack

Metallica have announced details for the soundtrack to their upcoming part-concert, part-narrative 3D film, Metallica Through the Never. Due September 24 via the band’s very own Blackened Recordings label, Metallica Through the Never (Music from the Motion Picture) will actually just feature music from Metallica’s back catalog. The two-disc collection is essentially a live album, one that culls material from the three shows the heavy metal gods played in Canada last year while filming their IMAX-sized epic.

Among the classics included: “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Enter Sandman,” “Master of Puppets,” “…And Justice for All,” “Battery,” “Fuel,” and “Hit the Lights,” the opening track off Metallica’s 30-year-old debut record, Kill ‘Em All. Digital and CD versions will be available on September 24, while vinyl editions (in both 33 1/3-RPM and 45-RPM) are expected to arrive later in the fall.

Fans hoping for an album of fresh Metallica material will have to wait until 2014 or 2015. Drummer Lars Ulrich recently said the band will “probably” start recording their Death Magnetic follow-up sometime next year. “[Next year] we’ll be all about a new Metallica record,” he said. “In about another year and a half you’ll probably see one.”

Metallica Through the Never stars actor Dane DeHaan as a fictional roadie “sent on an urgent mission” while Metallica are busy tearing through a sold-out arena show. The film’s concert footage was shot over the course of three gigs performed at Rexall Place in Edmonton and Rogers Arena in Vancouver. As SPIN noted previously, the fast-approaching blockbuster opens on every single IMAX screen in North America on September 27; it then rolls out to standard theaters on October 4. Watch the flick’s apocalyptic trailer below, followed by the live album’s track list.
