Jay-Z finished most of Magna Carta Holy Grail in two weeks, Terius Nash has revealed. “The body, the significant part of this album?” the singer and songwriter better known as The-Dream said in a video interview with Revolt TV. “Two weeks of work. Easily.”
The man behind such hits as “Umbrella” and “Single Ladies” also said that in an era where album sales no longer reflect an artist’s cultural reach, artists should follow Jay-Z’s lead and partner with corporate brands. “Everybody should do that,” The-Dream said. “I should be over at Mountain Dew … Those are the new labels.”
In an intimate chat similar to Revolt’s recent interview with Timbaland, the-Dream discusses the inspiration behind opening track “Holy Grail,” mentions that he wasn’t in the Samsung commercial, and describes the energy in the room during the making of the album.
The-Dream’s remarks about the speedy completion of Jay-Z’s new album are especially intriguing considering Rick Rubin recently revealed Kanye West finished the lyrics for his own Yeezus album in two hours. His endorsement of corporate partnership for artists arrives as Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne have lost endorsement deals due to their lyrical content — the latter from Mountain Dew. Tyler, the Creator also ran into controversy when doing the Dew.
Looks like the debate over the proper relationship between sponsors and artists will take longer to complete than the year’s highest-profile albums.
