Young Galaxy Shoot Their Own Disaster Flick for ‘New Summer’

Young Galaxy 'New Summer' Video Ultramarine

Canada’s Young Galaxy excel at crafting the sort of beautiful synth-kissed dream-pop that would so perfectly accompany a beautiful day spent poolside of picnicking, so when one sees the title of their single, “New Summer,” there’s no need for concern. Everything is just as it should be. But the video for that same song suggest the exact opposite. While singer Catherine McCandless coos, “Here it comes again, the beautiful, warm weather,” the viewer is given a front-row seat to nothing less than a nuclear apocalypse. In teaming up with director Ivan Grbovic and his special effects engineers, the band told NPR they hoped to make us question the sound and meaning of the song itself. And sure enough, on second listen, there’s the second part of McCandless’ seemingly innocuous lyric: “Right before the end of everything ever.” Like “Fall for You” before it, “New Summer” hails from the group’s fourth album, Ultramarine, which came out April 23 on Toronto’s Paper Bag Records.
