Tupac Shakur’s music is coming ever closer to Broadway. In March 2012, the producers of planned 2Pac musical Holler If Ya Hear Me put out a call for auditions, leading to an afternoon of Twitter humor from Danny Brown, ?uestlove, and El-P ( for example: “What’s next, ‘Biggie on Ice’?”). For all the raised eyebrows, though, the show has a Tony-nominated director in Kenny Leon, whose credits include the Sean Combs-starring 2004 revival of Raisin in the Sun and a 2010 production of Fences with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
Now the AP reports the Pac musical is still in the making, with a workshop underway now in New York. Along with 2Pac’s music, the who is said to have an original story that follows two childhood friends struggling in a present-day industrial city in the Midwest. Producers are aiming for the 2013-2014 Broadway season — in other words, soon. All eyez on midtown Manhattan.
In other pop-gone-Broadway developments, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy is contributing original music to a Daniel Craig-starring revival of 1978 drama Betrayal, which officially opens October 27. A musical based on the Beatles’ catalogue is also headed to Broadway. We have, however, been spared a Nirvana musical, at least for now.
