Earlier this month, Smith Westerns shared “Idol,” a sighing summer stunner from their third LP, the just-released Soft Will. Now the glammy daydreamers have paired the single with a bummed-out music video that was shot, directed, and edited by Sandy Kim (who also happens to be the girlfriend of DIIV drummer Colby Hewitt). The four-minute clip finds the Chicago trio moping in the middle of a party, and no amount of malt liquor or sexual harassment can pull the boys out of their dead-eyed funk. If the sun-streaked video for “Varsity” captured a romance mid-blossom, then this short wallows in the gloomy aftermath, where — as lead singer Cullen Omori puts it — “Every day is a hangover.” So sorry, bro.
