Tuxedoed Pharrell Fancies Up Funky ‘Despicable Me 2’ Song ‘Happy’ for Late Night TV

Tuxedoed Pharrell sings 'Despicable Me 2' Soundtrack's Retro Rave-Up 'Happy' on 'Kimmel'

It’s a good time to be Pharrell. Well, it’s always a good time to be that N.E.R.D., but it’s especially true now. Mr. Williams had a major hand in the country’s current top two songs — Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” — which has boosted him to a level of visibility perhaps even greater than during his early-’00s heyday. In other words, had we told you the following a mere three months ago, you might not believe a word of what’s to come: Above, you can find a video of Skateboard P performing “Happy,” one of his songs from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, on Jimmy Kimmel Live backed by a full band and a dozen back-up singers. Of course, Pharrell scored the original 2010 animated feature as well, but he wasn’t a rock star in his own right at that time. Also, this performance went a whole lot better than when he and Thicke played a zombified Myspace launch party that was broadcast on the very same late night show. And it sure as hell beats getting sued by will.i.am.
