Kathleen Hanna Mounts First Tour With New Band the Julie Ruin

This fall, Kathleen Hanna will take her new (but actually sort of old) project, the Julie Ruin, on tour for the very first time. The riot grrrl’s latest band will play eight dates across the U.S. in September, making stops in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Then, in November, the group will return to the stage for an appearance at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin.

Hanna originally unveiled the Julie Ruin name back in 1997, when she released a one-off album titled (what else) Julie Ruin. Then, in 2010, after a years-long hiatus from music caused by a serious battle with Lyme disease, the former Bikini Kill and Le Tigre leader announced she planned to revive the moniker as a full band. Which brings us to this tour announcement and to Run Fast, the outfit’s upcoming debut album, due September 3 via the band’s own TJR Records (distribution is being handled by Dischord). The fast-approaching LP includes already heard tracks “Oh Come On” and “Girls Like Us,” as well as a song mixed by James Murphy titled “Just My Kind.” The Julie Ruin’s roster is rounded out by Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox, Kiki and Herb member Kenny Mellman on keyboards, guitarist Sara Landeau, and drummer Carmine Covelli.

In other Kathleen Hanna-related news, Sundance Selects recently announced that it has acquired the North American rights to The Punk Singer, a documentary directed by Sini Anderson that examines Hanna’s musical career, influence on the feminist punk movement, and personal life.
