Portland fourpiece Hausu don’t have much of a past yet but their forthcoming debut LP Total offers plenty of hope for a healthy future. Sub Pop’s Hardly Art imprint will release the 10-track set on June 25, and early taste “Chrysanthemum” is a sweetly sour mix of Dischord-ant post-punk drive and vintage alt-rock gnarl (via Dinosaur Jr. et al.). Amidst the squalling guitars and thudding drums, singer Ben Friars Funkhouser emotes in heavy sighs and pained howls. It’s hard to imagine the song’s titular flower lasting five minutes inside of that crucible without getting wilted or shredded, but the contrast between sound and subject makes the beautiful seem that much more unattainable. Go a round with the Total track, then skip over to Stereogum to hear “Leaning Mess.”
