See Nick Cave and a Children’s Choir Sing About Mermaid ‘Snatch’

Nick Cave Bad Seeds 'Mermaids' Live Video

We’re not sure which costs more: Having the Silver Lake Music Conservatory’s children’s choir perform at your concert, or buying really really good ear plugs for all of those adorable little tykes. Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds brought the kiddies out to Coachella for a stirring set that included an incredibly blue rendition of “Stagger Lee” (the choir sat that old murder ballad out) and they can also be seen in the official live video for “Mermaids,” the next single from the band’s excellent 15th album Push the Sky Away. The pro-shot black and white clip premiered on Rolling Stone and is stirring indeed thanks in no small part to all of those voices, but a little awkward considering the part where Cave’s voice sings, “I was the match that would fire up her snatch.” Or that other spot where he claims, “I believe in 72 virgins on a chain.” Or … well, it’s the Bad Seeds; songs about visceral instincts and existential gloom are par for the course. For more of those, revisit the videos for “Jubilee Street” and “We No Who U R,” and also Record Store Day B-side “Animal X.” For more insight into Cave’s cranky, creepy mind, check out the results of his recent Twitter Q&A.
