Hear Camera Obscura’s Swooning Waltz ‘Fifth in Line to the Throne’

Camera Obscura

Princess Beatrice, this one’s for you. Camera Obscura’s latest offering from the Scottish dreamers’ upcoming Desire Lines (due out June 4 on 4AD) is waltzing, waiting-in-vain slow dance “Fifth in Line to the Throne.” Where the LP’s previously shared “Do It Again” is a confidently peppy come-on, this one luxuriates in a less certain relationship. “If you want me to leave, then I’ll go / Do you want me to stay? Let it show,” frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell confides, unhurriedly, amid a smoldering, organic-sounding arrangement of cleanly picked electric guitar, restrained bass, shuffling drums, and flickering keyboard. Just as with “Do It Again,” the overall effect is to pull you in closer, to the band or the person next to you. So, Beatrice of York, share this with that special prince!
