Watch Phoenix’s Winsome Alternate ‘Entertainment’ Video

Phoenix, "Entertainment," video

If Phoenix’s “Entertainment” is supposed to convey that entertainment can be whatever you make it, as constantly evolving as, um, evolution, it’s undoubtedly succeeding. The first single from the French band’s upcoming Bankrupt! LP (out April 23 via Loyaute/Glassnote) already has one video, an elaborate, Asian-themed clip by accomplished director Patrick Daughters (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Feist, Grizzly Bear). Dinosaur Jr. have gracefully dismembered the song, and Blood Orange has injected it with neon-hued R&B. Now Phoenix have shared a “homemade performance” video for it, which shows the band in a picnic-like setting, birds flying by and a small dog scampering around, as they play a warm, somewhat pared-down rendition.

Phoenix will be on TV this weekend, performing as the musical guests on the April 6 episode of Saturday Night Live. They’ve performed other songs from their upcoming full-length live — “The Real Thing,” “Bourgeois,” “Drakkar Noir,” and “Chloroform” — so it will be worth seeing which (if any) of those songs they’ll bring to the show. A

nd don’t miss Phoenix’s recent interview with SPIN, where frontman Thomas Mars encouragingly reveals that a truly disappointing show they played a few years ago after Lollapalooza was, in fact, their “worst show ever.” This low-key, charming video is an antidote to such negative thoughts.
