It’s common for a son to be leery of his mother’s new boyfriend. That situation is no doubt amplified when your mother’s new boyfriend is legendary Public Enemy hype man/reality TV star/insane person Flavor Flav. On the night of October 17 at Flavor’s Las Vegas home, the rapper reportedly chased his longtime girlfriend’s 17-year-old son around the house with some butcher knives. The rapper was arrested at the time, but yesterday, after the son testified at an evidence hearing about what transpired, Flav was formally charged with two felony counts for assault with a weapon and child endangerment. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison, USA Today reports.
According to the Las Vegas Police Department, Flavor got into a physical confrontation with his then-fiancee after she accused him of cheating on her. Flav “grabbed her by the shoulders, stomach and arms, and threw her to the ground two separate times,” Las Vegas PD said in October, and the fight also resulted in the woman, Elizabeth Trujillo, having her earring ripped out of her ear. It was at that point that her son Gibran intervened. Gibran and Flavor started wrestling — with the son having a sizable physical advantage over the diminutive MC — so Flavor sought out two butcher knives and then chased the teen “around the living room, threatening to kill Gibran.” Gibran eventually locked himself in a room, but Flavor kicked in the door. In the end though, the only person who ended up getting cut was Flavor Flav after he sliced his own finger on the knife he was holding.
While Flavor Flav owned up to much of the incident at the time, he denied chasing or threatening to kill Gibran. However, yesterday’s testimony uncovered enough evidence to charge Flavor. The rapper’s lawyer said he would plead not guilty.
In what might be one of the greatest “fuck yous” in judicial history, the judge scheduled Flavor’s arraignment in Las Vegas for April 18, the same day the rapper and Public Enemy will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
