Fall Out Boy Try to Out-Funny ‘Conan’ With ‘Spinal Tap’ Riffs

'Save Rock and Roll' stars pay tribute to landmark 1984 comedy by aping old gags

As if calling their just-released comeback album Save Rock and Roll wasn’t meta enough, Fall Out Boy loaded their performance on Conan last night (April 17) with winking references to the classic rock’n’roll mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. When lead vocalist/guitarist launched into FOB’s genre-jumping single “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up),” guitarist Joe Trohman and bassist Pete Wentz were hiding in space pod props, awaiting to make their entrance a la Spinal Tap. And, just like in the 1984 comedy, Wentz’s pod failed to open, forcing him to sit out the first half of the Save Rock and Roll highlight. Luckily, Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls (played by legendary funnyman Harry Shearer) showed up to fill in for the indisposed Wentz.

No, it’s not the same as a Courtney Love or Elton John cameo, but it’s a big win if you ask anyone in the comedy nerd set. Watch through till the end for another nod to This Is Spinal Tap, via a miniature Stonehenge statue and a group of dancing “Druids.”
