It was inevitable. Once news broke that Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins would induct Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, prog-nerds everywhere began counting down the days till the former Nirvana drummer (and recent SPIN cover star) would share the stage with the Holy Trinity. History, of course, was made last night (April 18) when Grohl, Hawkins, and producer Nick Raskulinecz honored the 2112 three-piece by blasting through 1976’s “Overture” while decked out in Rush-referencing wigs and white kimonos.
The legendary trio joined Grohl in the spotlight near the song’s end, before launching into Rush classics “Tom Sawyer” and “The Spirit of Radio.” The class of 2013 ceremony won’t air on HBO until May 18 (9 p.m. ET/PT), but fan-shot footage of “Overture” has been generously shared online, along with video of Grohl’s induction remarks and Rush’s acceptance speech.
Be warned: all of the clips feature shaky camera work and Rush fans are some of the loudest on record, so turn down the volume at first.
