The-Dream makes no bones about his general M.O. being bonin’. Backstage at the Grammys, he told us that he’s doing his best to focus on making “authentic love-making CDs” these days, and then he announced that he’d changed the title of his next album to Fourplay, natch. So if you’re DJing a club and you know that the Def Jam executive VP of A&R is in the house, we assume you’d be bright enough to throw some slow jams into the mix. Still, the man born Terius Nash is gonna spell it out for you — with a little help from his buddy Fabolous — just so there are no misunderstandings.
Surprisingly, new song “Slow it Down” is a message for the disc jocks, not the ladies. “DJ you know you wrong,” The-Dream admonishes, “Enough with the muthafuckin’ dance songs.” Is this the first shot fired in an impending war between R&B artists and EDM stars? Okay, probably not, but he does have some strong words for any peers that might be a little too focused on the club: “Baby, I’ll never sell out / Some other nigga had to do a dance record or the label wouldn’t put him out.”
Usher has yet to respond, but Fabolous is happy to be rapping on this slow jam, adopting a noticeably Drake-like flow, even if he is “on some R. Kelly Lil’ Kim shit.” Perhaps that’s because the Young Money croon-rapper made our “REAL 10 Hottest MCs” list.
