HBO Picks Up Pussy Riot Documentary for June Premiere

A documentary chronicling Pussy Riot’s internationally publicized legal struggles is set to premiere on HBO later this year.

According to Rolling Stone, the film, titled Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer, will debut on the premium cable channel in early June. The feature (which shouldn’t be confused with the similarly titled book about the feminist art-punk collective, Pussy Riot!: A Punk Prayer for Freedom) was directed and produced by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin.

A Punk Prayer originally premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Punk Spirit. Soon after, HBO bought the U.S. television rights to the film, which was screened earlier this week at South By Southwest 2013.

In Russia, a court recently banned video footage of the anti-Putin protest that led to two Pussy Riot members being imprisoned. One of the band members currently serving a jail sentence, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, was hospitalized last month, for “exhaustion.”
