Feeding People’s February debut, Island Universe, is “a hypnotic, concussive sprint through the late ’60s” powered by the mighty vocals of frontwoman Jessie Jones. The Southern California psych crew have also got a knack for music videos with strong narratives and tasteful cinematography, thanks in no small part to director Dick Thompson. He was responsible for the bizzare domestic murder fantasy that accompanied last year’s early taste, “Island Universe,” and he returns for “Big Mother.”
The clip for the far more aggressive blues grinder introduces us to the song’s titular badass: a cig-smoking, cookie-baking, romance novel-reading woman who has a pint-sized nemesis in her small son. The boy is the real star of the show. He’s an aspiring boxer preparing for the fight of his life … with his big mother’s correspondingly large tookus. Wondering where that extra in-song grit comes from? Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers and solo star Hanni El Khatib lent their production expertise to the entire LP.
