Deadmau5 and Imogen Heap Crowdsource Animated ‘Telemiscommunications’ Video
Lovelorn visuals compile the work of 20 animators
The video for Deadmau5 and Imogen Heap’s “Telemiscommunications” is the opposite of its title. For visuals to the gentle electro-pop ballad’s lyrics of technologically obstructed romance, the Soundgarden-arresting EDM whiz and emotive-voiced former Frou Frou singer tapped 20 animators via an international competition. The song shows a softer side of the ‘Mau5, with atmospheric percussion and somber keyboard chords reminiscent of the freshly reunited Postal Service’s “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.” Heap’s free-flowing vocals, meanwhile, mimic a phone conversation like R. Kelly’s “Real Talk.” If the song’s characters are left lamenting their gadgets, the video, which artfully splices together each animator’s distinctive style, shows technology isn’t all phone-fail Brit-rap and how-soon-they-forget Timberlake-Timbaland-50 Cent collaborations. Ayo!
“Telemiscommunications” is out today via Ultra Music. Deadmau5 is also down in Austin for South By Southwest, where he and Richie Hawtin will perform tonight at the Media Temple’s SXSWi closing party at Stubb’s. Deadmau5 is set to perform on Saturday, March 23, at the main stage of Ultra Music Festival.
