The Roots, Elvis Costello, Bilal, and many other performers saluted the music of Prince last night in a tribute concert at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. D’Angelo, who gave an unannounced duo performance with the Roots’ ?uestlove on Monday night in Brooklyn, was also among the artists honoring the Purple One. YouTube footage of the Voodoo singer’s Carnegie Hall exploits is lacking, to say the least, but below you’ll find a one-minute clip of D’Angelo, the Roots, noted Prince cover-er Maya Rudolph, and other familiar faces (we see you, Fred Armisen) giving a loose, funky rendition of Sign ‘O’ the Times‘ luxuriant epic “It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night.” The original song’s oh-we-oh Wizard of Oz echoes happen to coincide with today’s release of new movie Oz the Great and Powerful — speaking of signs of the times — but ultimately more important is whether D’Angelo’s continued live return means his long-delayed next album is any closer to 100 percent done. Also unclear is whether anyone, in the true Prince spirit, seized the opportunity to destroy someone else’s guitar.
