Johnny Marr Teams With New Order for Two April Gigs

Former New Order bassist Peter Hook and ex-Cure drummer/keyboardist Lol Tolhurst may be feuding, but the remaining members of New Order are getting along famously with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr — so much so that they’re planning to play two warm-up shows together this spring.

As Slicing Up Eyeballs reported last week, Marr revealed that he’s booked to perform with the dance-rock icons in Las Vegas and Santa Barbara on April 11 and 18, respectively. Now, New Order has confirmed the gigs (via Slicing Up Eyeballs), and also teased that they’ll be announcing “more U.S. dates later in the year.” The Vegas and Cali concerts are nicely wedged between Coachella‘s two weekends (April 12 to 14 and April 19 to 21). Both New Order and Marr have been confirmed to take the stage at the annual Indio, California festival (on different days, though). The English artists have a history together: aside from a shared bill for the 2006 Manchester v Cancer benefit, Marr also led dance supergroup Electronic with New Order frontman Bernard Sumner. And according to the NME, the ex-Smiths star also inspired the name for Sumner’s short-lived Bad Lieutenant project.

Marr — who has previously played with Modest Mouse, the Cribs, and Dinosaur Jr. — will release his first solo album, The Messenger, on February 26. We’ve already heard a number of cuts from the LP (the title track, “The Right Thing Right,” and “Upstarts”) but fans will get a chance to see the guitar wizard live when he embarks on an 18-date North American trek this. In addition to the four aforementioned performances, Marr will stop by several major cities, starting with the April 11 billing in Vegas and ending with a show in Boston on May 4.

New Order have also confirmed that they’ll be playing two dates in South America (April 5 in Peru and April 7 in Colombia) before coming Stateside. Find North American tour information for Marr and New Order below.
