Deftones Planning Career-Spanning Vinyl Live Set

The Deftones’ seventh album, Koi No Yokan, fared well here at SPIN. We included the Sacramento alt-metal outfit’s latest full-length in our 50 Best Albums of 2012 list and placed it at No. 5 on our 20 Best Metal Albums of 2012 feature. Now, as a victory lap to celebrate what SPIN called “arguably [the band’s] strongest music,” the Deftones are planning to release a live vinyl set spanning the better part of their 25-year history.

As Blabbermouth points out, frontman Chino Moreno recently appeared on Nikki Sixx’s radio show, Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx, and revealed that he’s been poring through the poptimist-leaning group’s old live tapes.

“The last week and a half, I’ve been having to go through all these tapes,” he said. “We’re putting out a live vinyl set. For every record, we’re going to put out like four or five songs from that time, that era. So I’ve been going through all these tapes from ’95-’96 and they’re hard to listen to… Like, seriously, I really feel we’ve gotten better as a band and me as a vocalist.” Moreno didn’t offer any more specific details (like a release date or pricing information), but fans can expect a 28- to 35-song vinyl set from the Deftones at some point in the future.

In the meantime, scroll down to listen to the entire Sixx Sense interview, in which Moreno discusses his creative process, being a homebody, and cops to a love of new wave.
