There’s just a hint of “Spirit in the Sky” in the new song from Bay Area garage-rock trio Burnt Ones. “Fountain of Youth” is full of grit, rumble, and pop, with a would-be transcendent melody that teases the listener with the promise of going big, but keeps things just mellow enough to push everything slightly off-center in the most satisfying of ways. The track is a low-to-the-ground chugger powered by a steady kick drum and plenty of guitar grind. The band has a previous LP under their belt, plus contributions to compilations on the imprint run by Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer (Castle Face), but their forthcoming second album has the power to really put them on the map. Never Walk Alone comes April 30 via Burger Records, who promise “a record that white-knuckles down a dark passage of mental abuse and on through to spiritual release.” Set yourself free.
