Beggars Banquet Records is digging into its crates for a massive five-album box set reissue campaign that kicks off later this year, beginning with collections from Love and Rockets and Gary Numan (via Slicing Up Eyeballs).
On May 13, Beggars will drop a five-disc Love and Rockets CD set featuring bonus track-filled editions of the band’s four 1980s albums — 1985’s Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, 1986’s Express, 1987’s Earth, Sun, Moon, and 1989’s Love and Rockets — as well as a new compilation titled Assorted!, which consists of the Swing! and Bubblemen EPs, six live tracks, a B-side, and the previously unreleased song “Sorted.”
That same day, fans can pick up a five-CD Gary Numan retrospective that will bring together three of the synth pioneer’s early ’80s albums — 1981’s Dance, 1982’s I, Assassin, and 1983’s Warriors — plus the double-disc live album Living Ornaments ’81.
According to the Beggars Archive blog, this new series was conceived as an effort to keep “slower selling titles” in manufacture and to give new fans a robust introduction to said artists’ work.
“With limited rack space available, few stores can stock artist’s catalogues in depth,” the U.K. label’s blog reads. “It’s increasingly difficult for labels to justify manufacturing the slower selling titles. Most acts have one or two titles in their catalogue that sell regularly but it’s invertible that other titles have a more limited demand. To combat this, and keep albums available digitally in a higher sound quality format, Beggars Archive is introducing a series of 5 Album CD box sets. We’re aware this may be the last chance to present the albums as physical releases in the foreseeable future, so the sets are targeted to fans and casual buyers who are interested in the artists but may not know their work in depth.”
Future box sets from Bauhaus, the Fall, the Charlatans, the Icicle Works, Gene Loves Jezebel, Fields of the Nephilim, and Buffalo Tom are slated for the spring and summer. A collection focused on the solo work of former Transglobal Underground singer Natacha Atlas will also be available on May 13.
