Beyonce Probably Should’ve Sung the Super Bowl National Anthem, Too
Alicia Keys struggled with pitch and pacing
You can’t help but feel for Alicia Keys, Super Bowl 2013’s middle child. She’d already signed up to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before unrepentant lip-syncer Beyoncé delivered the Great Comeuppance at her Pepsi halftime press conference. She’d already signed up when Jennifer Hudson was announced to sing “America, the Beautiful” with guaranteed heartstring-tuggers the Sandy Hook Elementary choir.
So by the time Keys took her seat behind the piano at New Orleans, Louisiana’s Superdome, JHud had already sung the roof off with those little tearjerkers (video below), and Beyoncé, well, we all know how her national anthem turned out. Maybe it was all that pressure, maybe it was the excruciatingly paced arrangement, or that she started in too high of an octave, but let’s just say Alicia’s “Star-Spangled Banner” won’t so proudly be hailed. Watch for yourself above.
