Hear Breeders Drummer Jose Medeles’ Propulsive 1939 Ensemble Cut ‘Sabotage’

1939 Ensemble

Jose Medeles played drums on the last few Breeders records, but with the Deal sisters’ band reuniting their Last Splash lineup this year, the Portland-based musician is stepping out on a project of his own. Medeles’ duo with another PDX percussionist, David Coniglio, releases its full-length debut, Howl & Bite, on April 16 via Jealous Butcher. Late-album track “Sabotage” shows what a lively noise they can conjure based around drums and vibraphones. An obvious setting for expressive, instrumental music like this would be on TV and film soundtracks, but it’s bustling and textured enough to captivate on headphones, too.
