Hear Low’s Almost Upbeat ‘Just Make it Stop’

Low’s tenth long-player is coming March 19 via Sub Pop, and knowing that Wilco main man Jeff Tweedy is producing The Invisible Way makes that news all the more exciting. Of course, “exciting” isn’t a word oft bandied about when it comes to the Duluth, Minnesota trio — heartfelt, slow-burning, doleful, and stately would all be acceptable entries in a game of Apples to Apples, and it’s Low’s consistent ability to perfectly weave these very grown-up vibes into album after album of tensely beautiful songs that keeps their cultish base clamoring for more. Early taste “Plastic Cup” depicted the band at their most mournful, Alan Sparhawk singing under a sky swollen with barometric pressure. New one “Just Make It Stop” is Low’s version of pop: a harmonically backed Mimi Parker cooing over shuffling drums and a steady piano pulse accented by hits of electric guitar. You can almost feel the urge to dance nagging at your hips and the lyrics likewise nearly suggest something celebratory: “Now I’m looking up, from a 10-foot hole / Seeing nothing but blue sky, shining on my soul.” If Willow Smith isn’t yet a Low fan, she should definitely start doing her homework.
