Girls creator, lead actress, and — as she was described this morning on TODAY — “Brooklyn hipster” Lena Dunham had a big night Sunday (January 13), winning two Golden Globes for her HBO comedy series as the show simultaneously premiered its second season. As previously reported, the show enlisted high-profile talent for its inaugural soundtrack, including an eponymous original song from Best Pop Album of the Year artist Santigold, a peppy Rolling Stones cover from Tegan and Sara, and an unearthed Some Nights leftover from fun. Lead-off episode “It’s About Time” checks back in on Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, and (mostly absent) Jessa via a party at Hannah’s apartment with her new roommate, her now-gay ex-boyfriend Elijah, and music as always played a crucial role. For instance, we can tell we’re in for some dramz because K.Flay’s “So Fast, So Maybe” kicks off the party advising, “If you like S&M, go choke a bitch.”

Wounded after a tryst with her aloof deflowerer Ray, Shoshanna tries to put on a brave face at the party. This includes her hilariously pathetic karaoke take on Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls.” But Ray still can’t get her out of his head. He corners her in front of a bed full of purses for a sweep-you-off-your-feet kiss soundtracked to Solange’s excellent “Losing You.”

Kept man Elijah needs help wrangling his intoxicated middle-aged boyfriend, so he enlists “sweet girl” Hannah to stealthly escort him out the door. Meanwhile, Charlie struggles to please his suffocated free-spirited new girlfriend as Marnie offers a kind shoulder. Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” pounds in the background.

Hannah finally tells “main hang” Adam, who’s still in a cast and peeing in pots after getting hit by a truck in last season’s closer, that she’s changed her mind and wants out of their relationship. She heads over to the apartment of her new fling, played by Donald Glover, and promptly disrobes as Vampire Weekend’s blooping cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Going Down” takes the episode to the credits.

Also featured in this episode: Regina Spektor’s “Your Honor,” Alt-J’s “Dissolve Me,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Sweetie (Kiss),” and Amp Live’s “Hot Right Now.”
