Alabama Shakes Complete ‘SNL’ Roots-Rock Trilogy of Meh

alabama shakes, snl

And the Alabama Shakes make three. After this season’s competent performances from Mumford & Sons and the Lumineers, Saturday Night Live will complete its middling roots-rock hat-trick when the Alabama quartet plays Studio 8H on February 16 (via Deadline).

Alabama Shakes’ guest appearance will come six days after the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, so the Boys & Girls stars will either be hanging loose after victory or heartbroken from disappointment. They have a shot at two awards: Best New Artist (against Hunter Hayes and fellow SNL stars fun., Frank Ocean, and the Lumineers) and Best Rock Performance, for “Hold On” (facing off with the Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy,” Bruce Springsteen’s “We Take Care of Our Own,” Coldplay’s “Charlie Brown,” and Mumford’s “I Will Wait”).

Also up for an award (albeit a completely different one) is the host that’s been paired with the cash-poor band: Django Unchained star Christoph Waltz, who just won a Golden Globe for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s latest and could take home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the (Barbra Streisand-featuring) Academy Awards on February 24.

The week before Alabama Shakes drop by SNL, Justin Bieber will pull double-duty as musical guest and host for the February 9 episode of the late-night sketch show. Oh, well — they can’t all be Kendrick.
