Solange Wins for ‘Losing You’ With Weirdo-R&B Dance Party on ‘Fallon’

The cover of Solange’s “Losing You” 12-inch single — yes, Beyoncé’s sister, pressed on wax by Grizzly Bear-affiliated Terrible Records — is highlighter yellow. You have to hold it just the right way to see the artist and title information. The cover of her True EP, also Terrible, also loaded with “Losing You,” is the same, only red. You could take that as a statement about the “I Decided” singer’s multicolored appeal: quirkier than that of her Destiny’s Child sibling, maybe, but just as blindingly obvious to those who’ll notice.

A Balearic ballad in contrast to much major-label R&B’s awkward EDM trend-humping, SPIN’s #10 song of 2012 parallels Swedish sprite Robyn’s lovelorn, forward-looking take on chart pop so powerfully our own Rob Harvilla has already called “Losing You” for HBO’s next potential Girls soundtrack (speaking of awkward humping). Solange’s performance last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon was as distinctive as her music deserved, with fabulous Sesame Street-chic duds and equally fabulous dancing — including by song co-writer/co-producer Dev Hynes, who also co-wrote Sky Ferreira’s “Everything Is Embarrassing.” Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly played drums, so he couldn’t dance, but he helped make damn sure everybody else did. The woman who once covered Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness is the Move” has still-more-endearing moves of her own.
